The phytochrome (phy) family of sensory photoreceptors modulates developmental programs in response to ambient light. Phys also control gene expression in part by directly interacting with the bHLH class of transcription factors, PHYTOCHROME-INTERACTING FACTORS (PIFs), and inducing their rapid phosphorylation and degradation.
