X-linked retinoschisis (XLRS) is an early onset degenerative retinal disease characterized by cystic lesions in the middle layers of the retina. These structural changes are accompanied by a loss of visual acuity and decreased contrast sensitivity. XLRS is caused by mutations in the gene Rs1 which encodes the secreted protein Retinoschisin 1.
