BACKGROUND: Megalencephalic leukoencephalopathy with subcortical cysts (MLC) is a rare leukodystrophy characterized by early-onset macrocephaly and progressive white matter vacuolation. The MLC1 protein plays a role in astrocyte activation during neuroinflammation and regulates volume decrease following astrocyte osmotic swelling.
