Obligate intracellular pathogens strictly rely on the host for replication. Specialized pathogen-encoded effector proteins play a central role in sophisticated mechanisms of host cell manipulation. In Chlamydia, a subset of these effector proteins, the inclusion membrane proteins, are embedded in the membrane of the vacuole in which the bacteria replicate.
