The Phytophtora root and stem rot is a serious disease in soybean. It is caused by the oomycete pathogen Phytophthora sojae. Growing Phytophthora resistant cultivars is the major method of controlling this disease. Resistance is race- or gene-specific; a single gene confers immunity against only a subset of the P. sojae isolates.
