BACKGROUND: Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is an autosomal dominant neurocutaneous disorder characterized by café-au-lait macules (CALMs), skinfold freckling, Lisch nodules, and neurofibromas. It is associated with heterozygous mutations in the neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) gene.
