Gitelman syndrome is a rare inherited renal tubulopathy characterized by hypokalemia, hypomagnesemia and metabolic alcalosis. It is caused by a mutation in the SLC12A3 gene leading to a dysfunction of the thiazide-sensitive sodium chloride cotransporter and the magnesium transporters in the distal convoluted tubules.
