BACKGROUND: ECHS1 is a key enzyme of the valine catabolic pathway and oxidation of fatty acids. In ECHS1 deficiency (ECHS1D), accumulation of toxic intermediates from the valine induces neurodegeneration, which presents Leigh syndrome (LS).
