Alkaptonuria (AKU) is a rare autosomal-recessive disease in the tyrosine metabolism pathway. AKU is due to a mutation of a gene coding for homogentisate dioxygenase, causing accumulation of homogentisic acid leading to a painful multisystemic disease.
