Staphylococcus aureus strains resistant to the last line antibiotic, vancomycin, have been of clinical concern. These include heterogeneous vancomycin-intermediate S. aureus (hVISA) and VISA. The hVISA phenotype cannot be detected by routine laboratory methods.
