Chikungunya virus (CHIKV), a positive-sense, single-stranded RNA virus in the family Togaviridae, is transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes. Of three known CHIKV genotypes, the Asian genotype was introduced into the Caribbean islands and rapidly spread throughout Central and South Americas.
