BACKGROUND: Cystinosis is an autosomal recessive lysosomal storage disorder characterized by accumulation of cystine in lysosomes throughout the body. Cystinosis is caused by mutations in the CTNS gene that encodes the lysosomal cystine carrier protein cystinosin.
