Apomixis results in asexual seed formation where progeny are identical to the maternal plant. In ovules of apomictic species of the Hieracium subgenus Pilosella, meiosis of the megaspore mother cell generates four megaspores. Aposporous initial (AI) cells form during meiosis in most ovules.
