BACKGROUND: Hereditary diffuse leukoencephalopathy with axonal spheroids (HDLS) is a rare autosomal dominant disorder characterized by cerebral white matter degeneration and caused by mutations in the colony-stimulating factor 1 receptor (CSF1R) gene.
