Photorespiration recycles fixed carbon following the oxygenation reaction of Ribulose, 1-5, carboxylase oxygenase (Rubisco). The recycling of photorespiratory C2 to C3 intermediates is not perfectly efficient and reduces photosynthesis in C3 plants.
