Rhizomania is a widespread viral plant disease of major importance in sugar beet cropping and breeding. It is caused by the Beet necrotic yellow vein virus (BNYVV), a Benyvirus transmitted by the soil inhabiting plasmodiophorid Polymyxa betae.
