BACKGROUND: The protist Plasmodiophora brassicae is a biotrophic soil-borne pathogen that causes clubroot on Brassica crops worldwide. Clubroot disease is a serious threat to the 8 M ha of canola (Brassica napus) grown annually in western Canada.
