Abnormal hexanucleotide repeat expansion of C9ORF72 is known to cause neurodegenerative disorders such as frontotemporal dementia. Additionally, patients with psychotic symptoms are more likely to have abnormal hexanucleotide repeat expansion than are patients without them.
