Accessory gene regulator (agr)-mediated quorum sensing plays a central role in staphylococcal pathogenesis. It primarily upregulates secreted virulence factors and downregulates cell surface proteins, thereby governing invasiveness of staphylococci and cell dispersal from biofilms.
