OBJECTIVE: To investigate the molecular basis of occult hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection (OBI) in Asian blood donors. DESIGN: OBI donors from Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand were tested for HBV serological markers, and strains were molecularly characterised.
