The development of cytogenetics and molecular genetics suggests a greater than expected importance of chromosomal, somatic and germ-line mosaicism. Mosaicism may cause varying expressivity of inherited diseases, aggregation of disorders regarded as "new mutations" in ostensibly healthy families, and neoplasia.
