In Egypt, little is known about the genetic background of Escherichia coli isolates harboring extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL). Five hundred twenty Enterobacteriaceae were prospectively collected (May 2007-August 2008) at the Theodor Bilharz Research Institute (Cairo).
