Many strains of Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) require exposure to prolonged cold for rapid flowering, a process known as vernalization. Vernalization in Arabidopsis results in the suppression of FLOWERING LOCUS C (FLC), a repressor of flowering.
