Chronic alcohol intake accounts for 60-90% of the cases of chronic pancreatitis, but other etiologies have been recognized and described in the very recent years. Genetic causes include mutations of the cationic trypsinogen gene PRSS1 (100 families in France), of its inhibitor SPINK1 and of the CFTR gene involved in cystic fibrosis.
