Infections with the intracellular bacterium Chlamydophila (C.) pecorum are highly prevalent worldwide in cattle. These infections cause significant diseases such as polyarthritis, pneumonia, enteritis, genital infections and fertility disorders, and occasionally sporadic bovine encephalomyelitis.
