International epidemiological studies have shown that clinical isolates of Staphylococcus aureus are usually capsulated with either type 5 or 8 capsular polysaccharides (CPs). Because all noncapsulated strains were found to be cross-reactive with polysaccharide 336 (336PS) antibodies, the noncapsulated strains were denoted as type 336PS.
