An Exo- mutant of Rhizobium leguminosarum biovar trifolii was isolated which did not produce acidic exopolysaccharide and induced defective, non-fixing nodules on clover plants. The nodules were defective at a late stage of development, they contained infection threads and bacteria were released into the host cells.
