The mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) p38alpha is involved in numerous biological processes and is a drug target for inflammation-associated diseases. Genetic analysis in mice demonstrated that fetuses lacking p38alpha are embryonic lethal owing to impaired placental development.
