In gynodioecious species, females and hermaphrodites coexist and the genetics of sex determination is usually nuclear cytoplasmic. Maintaining nuclear-cytoplasmic gynodioecy requires polymorphism for the feminizing genes (contained in the mitochondria) and the genes that restore male fertility (contained in the nucleus).
