The hypervariable site of the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) control region has been studied in several sheepdog breeds. The genetic diversity is high in the Central Asian guardian dog and the Northern Caucasian wolf dog (an aboriginal group of breeds) and low in the Caucasian guardian dog.
