The cause of the non-disjunction leading to trisomy 21 remains unclear. Recent evidence has suggested that 5,10-methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) and/or methionine synthase reductase (MTRR) might contribute to the maternal risk of trisomy 21.
