A 3 year study was conducted to evaluate mussels as bioindicators of faecal contamination in coastal ecosystems of California. Haemolymph samples from 4680 mussels (Mytilus spp.) were tested for Cryptosporidium genotypes using PCR amplification and DNA sequence analysis.
