Representatives of three ancient gene families of the antioxidant enzyme superoxide dismutase (SOD) can be found in most metazoans. In mammals and Caenorhabditis elegans, there is at least one gene each of the cytoplasmic, mitochondrial and extracellular lineages of SOD genes.
