The rice lesion mimic mutant spotted leaf 1 ( spl1) was first identified in the rice ( Oryza sativa) cultivar Asahi in 1965. This mutant displayed spontaneous disease-like lesions in the absence of any pathogen, and was found to confer resistance to multiple isolates of rice blast.
