Venous thromboembolic disease is a major cause of maternal morbidity and mortality. Virchow's triad of hypercoagulability, venous stasis, and vascular damage all occur during pregnancy. The risk of venous thromboembolism is five to six times higher during pregnancy and the puerperium.
