The ray-finned fishes ('fishes') vary widely in genome size, morphology and adaptations. Teleosts, which comprise approximately 23600 species, constitute >99% of living fishes. The radiation of teleosts has been attributed to a genome duplication event, which is proposed to have occurred in an ancient teleost.
