orange pericarp (orp) is a seedling lethal mutant of maize caused by mutations in the duplicate unlinked recessive loci orp1 and orp2. Mutant seedlings accumulate two tryptophan precursors, anthranilate and indole, suggesting a block in tryptophan biosynthesis.
