Phosphoribosylanthranilate isomerase (PAI) catalyzes the third step of the tryptophan biosynthetic pathway. Arabidopsis PAI cDNAs were cloned from a cDNA expression library by complementation of an Escherichia coli trpC- PAI deficiency mutation.
