Tobacco plants over-expressing L-phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL(+)) produce high levels of chlorogenic acid (CGA) and exhibit markedly reduced susceptibility to infection with the fungal pathogen Cercospora nicotianae, although their resistance to tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) is unchanged.
