This article addresses controversial issues associated with two different subjects: reliability of a genetic susceptibility test to identify individuals predisposed to developing periodontitis; use of subantimicrobial-dose doxycycline in the treatment of periodontal diseases. Each subject is assessed with regard to its practical application in the management of patients with chronic periodontitis.
