Isopentenyl diphosphate (IPP) is produced via two independent biosynthetic pathways in higher plants: the mevalonate (MVA) pathway in the cytoplasm and the non-mevalonate 2-C-methyl- D-erythritol-4-phosphate (MEP) pathway in plastids.
