An anaerobic, thermophilic, syntrophic propionate-oxidizing bacterium, strain SI(T), isolated previously from granular sludge in a thermophilic upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor, was characterized. The strain could grow fermentatively on pyruvate and fumarate in pure culture.
