In the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) of eukaryotes, N-linked glycans are first assembled on the lipid carrier dolichyl pyrophosphate. The GlcNAc(2)Man(9)Glc(3) oligosaccharide is transferred to selected asparagine residues of nascent polypeptides.
