von Willebrand factor (VWF) is synthesized primarily in vascular endothelial cells and secreted into the plasma as unusually large VWF multimers. Normally, these multimers are quickly degraded into smaller forms by a plasma metalloproteinase, VWF-cleaving protease (VWF-CP).
