Humans are exposed worldwide to a variety of environmental mycobacteria (EM) and most children are inoculated with live Bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccine. Although rarely pathogenic, poorly virulent mycobacteria, including BCG and most EM, may cause a variety of clinical diseases.
