By means of calcitonin screening programs, sporadic and hereditary medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) can be detected at an early stage. We investigated the histopathologic findings of 16 familial (mean age 32 +/- 21 years, female/male ratio 1.6:1) and 34 sporadic (mean age 58 +/- 15 years; female/male ratio 2.4:1) MTCs with stage T1 comparatively.
