The uniqueness of the space radiation field creates specific problems in the evaluation of hazards to men and materials. Comprehensive measurements of all physical parameters are necessary but not sufficient. Particular attention has to be paid to variables like solar flares by applying fast-responding active dosimetry. The assessment of biological consequences poses even more problems.
