Plakoglobin is a globular protein common to the intracellular plaques of adhesive junctions, predominantly desmosomes and adherens junctions. Recently, a number of pathogenic mutations have been described in other components of desmosomes, specifically in plakophilin 1, desmoplakin and desmoglein 1.
