Verotoxin producing Escherichia coli (VTEC) have been associated with disease outbreaks of diarrhea hemorrhagic colitis and hemolytic-uremic syndrome in humans. Contamination occurs mainly by ingestion of beef and dairy products, but water and person to person transmission have also been described.
