BACKGROUND: Pulmonary arteriovenous malformations (PAVMs) occur in over 25% of patients with the autosomal dominant disorder hereditary haemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT). Mutations in two genes, endoglin and ALK-1, are known to cause HHT.
